Coccyx Cushion – Tailbone Relief Sitting

Posture-Wedge-Cushion-Relief-when-Sitting-

For those that suffer with coccydynia, pain related to the tip of the tailbone, direct pressure of the coccyx on the seat can become painful. Sitting in a position where the pelvis is rolled back, places more load on the sitting bones and coccyx. Coccyx cushions with an area cut-out to remove pressure from the coccyx¹ can provide tailbone relief sitting. A coccyx cushion that also alters the pelvic position to redistribute pressure further forward, can be particularly helpful.

Benefits of the coccyx cushion for providing tailbone relief sitting

This coccyx cushion:

  • is an ergonomically designed orthopaedic cushion that distributes weight evenly,
  • has a unique cut-out section, minimising painful pressure on the coccyx region, providing tailbone relief sitting, and
  • is gently angled to encourage a pelvic position that reduces pressure on the coccyx.

The wedge angle of this coccyx cushion allows the pelvis, when sitting, to have weight evenly distributed through the left and right sitting bones (ischial tuberosities).  Putting weight on these bony points lifts pressure off the rest of the buttock area, including the coccyx. This can be particularly helpful in a car, where car seats are tiled backwards, shifting all the pressure to the back of the pelvis and the coccyx. This wedged coccyx cushion lifts the back of the seat, substantially reducing this pressure, providing tailbone relief sitting in the car.

The wedge also opens the hip angle at the front (which may also incidentally be good for relieving pain at the front of the hip) and allows the pelvis to more easily sit in a balanced,  ‘middle’ position.  Sitting with the pelvis rolled back may place more pressure on areas of the buttock and coccyx , potentially contributing to pain in these regions.

The coccyx cushion may provide tailbone relief in sitting for:

I have had Coccydynia for many years. The coccyx cushion helped my pain to settle and allowed me to return to pain free sitting. However it is still a great resource for hard and uncomfortable chairs or if I am having a flare up.
