Advice & Education
Often the most powerful treatment for musculoskeletal pain is getting the right advice at the right time. An important early step in any recovery is understanding what the problem is and how you can best help yourself in your own journey. If you continue to keep doing the things that cause the problem, then you will struggle to gain the full benefit of other treatments. For example, advice may be provided around workplace setup, sporting and recreational choices and schedules, recovery after exercise and pain management. All Hip Pain Professionals will be able to provide important advice and education about different aspects of your problem and rehabilitation.
Exercise & Rehabilitation
Exercise is a cornerstone of rehabilitation for most hip pain problems. Exercise can improve health of muscles, tendons, joints, bones and nerves, as well as address issues that may have contributed to the development of your current situation (such as muscle weakness, poor flexibility and pain). There are many ways that health professionals can provide exercise.
The best type of exercise for you will:
- Target your individual problems
- Be appropriate for your age
- Be at a level you can cope with
- Match your current level of physical conditioning
- Fit within your lifestyle and financial situation
- And most importantly, be something you enjoy
Exercise may be provided as a program which is developed for you. This may be to complete at home, or in the clinic under the supervision of a Hip Pain Professional on an individual or a group basis. One-on-one personalised sessions with a qualified health professional allows a high level of feedback individualised specifically for you. Group classes, on the other hand, can provide a great social support network and a more affordable option. Exercise might be provided on land or in water, in a gym or utilising pilates equipment.
Real Time Ultrasound (RTUS)
To assist with optimising how your muscles work, some Hip Pain Professionals will offer real time ultrasound imaging. Real time ultrasound allows the capturing of real-time pictures of structures inside the body, using high frequency sound waves. This amazing technology, also used for checking on unborn babies during pregnancy, provides a unique window to give insight into muscle as it works: Is the muscle healthy and functioning well This type of feedback helps you see instantly if you are doing an exercise correctly, helping you learn what to do and how to do it quickly, easily and effectively.
Manual Therapy, Medications, Injections, Surgery
While education and exercise are almost always the best first choices in any rehabilitative journey, other treatment may be useful or necessary to help with pain relief or to address more advanced or persistent problems. Such treatments may include manual therapy or hand-on treatments, oral or injected medications, or surgical procedures. Based on a thorough assessment, your Hip Pain Professional, or team of professionals, will recommend the treatments they believe will be most beneficial for your situation.
