Can You Treat Piriformis Syndrome Yourself (AKA Deep Gluteal Syndrome or Hip Related Sciatica)

You can treat piriformis syndrome yourself! Piriformis Syndrome is also known as “deep gluteal syndrome” or “hip related sciatica”.  This condition is related to irritation of the sciatic nerve as it runs through the pelvis, between the buttock muscles.  Pain can be felt deep in the buttock and/or may radiate down the leg, sometimes even as far as the foot.  You can read more about what this condition is in the “read more” links at the bottom of this blog.

So How can You Treat Piriformis Syndrome Yourself

At HipPainHelp we have produced an extensive self help program designed to take you through early, and then more progressive stages of your recovery from Piriformis Syndrome.

Firstly there are 7 educational lessons provided via online video.  These will:

  1. Educate you about this condition and what exactly it is
  2. Explain the different reasons the condition might have occurred
  3. Help you understand what you can do to help relieve your pain
  4. Teach you key activities and positions to avoid, or take care with, so to avoid flare ups

Learn A Progressive Self Exercise Program

The Self-Help program teaching you how you can treat Piriformis Syndrome yourself will then take you through a series of exercises.  This program aims to:

  • improve nerve health,
  • improve health of neighbouring structures,
  • address factors that might be part of the underlying cause and
  • address deconditioning (weakness) that has developed with the lack of normal activity.

The program provides you with a step by step progression from early, to intermediate to advanced levels.  You will be guided on how to know when to progress from one level to the next, with each level starting off with only a few exercises and then building up to encompass more repetitions as your condition settles.
